Folk Society members Johnnie Jones, Jerry Peterson, and John Esper are the Hey J's. The name Hey J's comes from the fact that the three members' names begin with the letter "J". The inspiration for the name, however, came from a lyric in one of the group’s favorite songs, "To Morrow" which proclaims: "I was a howling jay. "

These Hey J's do not howl. They weave their soft sounding guitar and vocal talents into a variety of acoustic musical tunes. Their typical performance features hit singles of the nineteen fifties and sixties, referred to as classic oldies or timeless favorites. Ballads, love songs, folk songs and a classic country song or two are usually included. Some songs, played as instrumentals, highlight every Hey J's appearance as well. Overall, their songs feature classic themes, some contemporary, and some downright humorous.

Speaking of humor, a Hey J's concert or appearance would not be complete without Johnnie Jones contributing a recitation of a humorous poem or two, either one of his favorites or from his own pen.

The Hey J's enjoy performing the songs they have known most of their lives. Songs they never tire of, and songs that never go out of style. They can entertain audiences of all ages.
