A Note from the President…
I hope everyone has plans to attend the Flint Folk Music Festival on Saturday, July 18 from 2 to 9:30 pm. This will be the Tenth Annual Flint Folk Music Festival production and it will be a good one. We’re back at Kearsley Park for the fourth year, enjoying the lovely park setting, the pavilion protection from the weather (remember the rain last year?) and the support of Kay Kelly and her great summer work crew. The music will again be superb. Canadian songstress Lynn Miles headlines with Mustard’s Retreat, Shout, Sister, Shout (Steppin’ In It with Rachel Davis), Jen Sygit and Hannah Fralick rounding out the lineup. You can discover more about these folk artists by visiting www.flintfolkmusic.org and following the links to their web sites. Then come listen to them in person at the Flint Folk Music Festival. As FFMS members, this is your festival both to enjoy and present to the community. Please consider volunteering some time during the festival to help make it a success. A list of volunteer posts and duties is included in this newsletter. You can call Gail Woods (810) 964-1000 or Jim (810) 238-4096 to volunteer. This mailing also includes a flyer for the festival. You can help publicize the festival by posting the flyer where you shop or work so others can discover the fantastic music we enjoy and the wonderful event that we present to the community. Let me know if you'd like additional flyers. You will also soon be able to download and print the flyer from the web site. - Jim Community Sing We’ve had a great time with the Community Sings! Stopping for the summer we’re hoping to start up again in the fall and for now keeping the same schedule. If you’d like to be a part of the songleading, let Bonnie or Jim know and we’ll work it out. Thanks a lot to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Flint. Their facilities were great and the folks there fun to work with! Hope you’ll join us next season! Building Fund The Flint Folk Music Society has continued to raise some monies since our last newsletter report. The fund now contains $5984. Future fundraising efforts will add to this amount. We continue to look at possible sites while the fundraising continues. Notes from the Membership corner: If you’re not yet a member of the Flint Folk Music Society, well, what are you waiting for? The membership fee is still only $10 per family. Becoming a member will keep you notified of our concert series with postcards mailed directly to you for each event and also give you a 16.5% discount for attendance of our concerts! That’s what you get. What we get as an organization is more recognition and weight as we apply for the funding that brings the Flint Folk Music Festival each summer. When we get these grants, it allows us to offer the Festival free of charge, and allows us the finances to bring in the great talent we have had throughout the years. Please consider joining the Flint Folk Music Society if you are not already a member! Thanks - Bonnie Pobocik Our new “Media and Community Relations Committee” Since our new board went into effect, we started focusing on the need for outreach into our community. The person on our board that seemed most to have a zeal for this part of the FFMS “mission” was Linda Jordan. In the weeks following her appointment as chairman of this committee, she got busy!! Many contacts and suggestions were pursued by this dynamo! One result of these pursuits has been that we have purchased an ad in a new publication based out of Flint. Look for it in “Flint Comix & Entertainment” a new artsy, creative and fun publication that’s free to the public. It has a large circulation area that spans more than just Genesee County. Some locations you can pick up a copy of “Flint Comix & Entertainment” are; Borders, VG’s, and Barnes & Noble. There are over 250 others as well. So you can see why we thought this would be a good place to advertise! Linda is doing a great job keeping the word out there about the great things going on at the Flint Folk Music Society! Be sure to pick up a copy of the magazine and check out our ad! If you know of an event where you could distribute our flyers for the festival or for our concert series and are willing to volunteer to pass them out or hang them, let us know and we’ll get them to you. Have a great summer!! |
